Junkyard Wars - Series 1 (2001)
Upon seeing the success of the UK series, the Americans were flown to England (along with some good 'ol Detroit steel) for their own shot at the game.
The host was George Gray, a comedian. He played it too much for laughs and was very loud by times. That being said, he was a good host and was very likeable. A very comendable job. Cathy Rogers, though, was on hand to lend a little British civility to the proceedings.
For the first three seasons Junkyard Wars was simply Scrapheap Challenge renamed, after that the US got their own version. It was still produced by the same company however. Therefore this is the first series of the show only known as Junkyard Wars.

The first ever, American series pits the Chicago Fire against the Texas Scrap Daddies. They'll have to build a one-passenger dragster in which they'll race three heats, the team with the fastest time, against the computer & not each other, wins it all. They aren't allowed to build 2 wheeled dragsters and they must meet racing standards for safety.
This episode finds the Young Guns facing off against Three Rusty Juveniles in a missile launch build. They must build a machine that will launch a pumpkin into the air and obliterate their opposing team's castle. Each team has 3 tries to get as close as they can to their opponent's castle. An outside hit is worth 30 points and a hit inside the castle gets 100 points. Highest score wins. The practice of launching pumpkins like this is called "Pun'kin Chunking/Chucking".
This episode, the third preliminary heat, has Dammage taking on the Long Brothers in a race to race...an off-road car. Their ATV will have to drive over (or through) a multitude of terrains. The race itself is a four lap, relay race which will give each teammember a chance to drive. The first team to get their final teammate over the finish line, wins. The only rule in the build is that they can't use the Quad bikes for parts.
After today, it's on to the semi-finals. The Metal Medics are pitted against the Art Attack in a watery challenge. The teams have ten hours to build a powerboat. The boat will have to be fast, maneuverable and able to carry two people...a pilot and a passenger. The teams will sail their boats from a floating dock to an island where they will have to pick up one teammember and take them back to the dock. The first team to "save" all of their teammembers wins.
The first semi-final is a watery challenge. The teams must build a diving device to send their diving certified expert to the bottom of a "shark tank". While on the bottom they must open a locked box, fill a bag with the treasure in the box and send the bag to the surface. No engines allowed to drive their pumps (which also are hand built).
The last machine before the finals is a hovercarft. The hovercraft must carry one teammate around a simple rectangular course. Each person must take one turn, making it a 4 person, 4 lap relay race. The winner will glide into the finals.
The final for this American series finds two teams building rockets. It will be easy to determine the winner. Which ever team's ostrich egg lands safely, wins. If both teams either break their egg or get it to land safely, then height will determine the winner.
