Meet The Immigrants
Original Cap: Hannibal
Documentary series looking at those who have chosen to make the UK their home - both legally and illegally.
(14 April 2008, 10:35pm - 11:05pm)
In Lyme Regis, a young woman arrives from Latvia to start a new job as a hotel worker. In Calais, refugees gather to try to cross the Channel to enter Britain illegally, after travelling thousands of miles. In Romania, a father says farewell to his young family before moving to England to start a new life as a taxi driver.
Sixty ferries make the crossing between Calais and Dover each day, carrying around 5,000 trucks. But freight is not their only cargo. Every day, refugees arrive in northern France from Africa and the Middle East hoping to enter the UK illegally. We meet 'Jamal', who has been living in a makeshift camp near Calais. The camp gets burned down by authorities so Jamal moves to Paris, where he meets fellow Afghani Wahid.
The Mussanzi family fled one of Africa's worst civil wars. Now settled in Bradford, they are trying to make a life for themselves, but there's one thing missing - their daughter Mapenzi - who stayed on in a war-torn Congo to work as a doctor. Will the British authorities let her visit her family in Yorkshire?
In Bournemouth it is estimated that one in 12 of the population is Polish. One of them is Monica Liminovitch, who came to England to care for the elderly. But can she cope away from her friends and family? Meanwhile, Victor Tamulis leaves his home in Latvia to live in Bournemouth and work as an odd-job man in a hotel that specialises in ballroom dancing.
There are more than 150,000 Filipinos living in London. Meet two of them working as domestics - Suzi, who gives most of her earnings to her sons in the Philippines, and Juanna, who's been sending all her money to her sick brother, and now she's heavily in debt. Also, youth worker Zorba is organising a talent show as a celebration of Roma culture and history.
Catalin Dobrisan left his family in Romania to work as a taxi driver in Plymouth, but things aren't goin to plan. Each year, about 20,000 people are refused asylum in the U.K. Famara Cessay is one of them. He came to Britain from the Gambia after a military coup. Forbidden from working here, he's trying to survive on weekly welfare vouchers.
