"Perth is the gateway to the Highlands of Scotland and still boasts a large imposing station. The main line features stretches of double and single track with semaphore block signalling predominating to Aviemore. There are stiff climbs to the two summits at Druimuachdar and Slochd, the latter forming the summit of the Inverness cut-off line. This direct line from Aviemore to Inverness was a major feat of civil engineering forced upon the Highland Railway company by the threat of competition. It was completed in 1898 having taken 14 years to build.
The two largest structures spanning the rivers Findhorn and Nairn are seen, like the rest of the route, not just from the cab but from a helicopter flying overhead!"
Narrated by BBC Scotland's Sally Magnussen.
What are Cab Rides?
Cab rides are videos shot from the front cab of a train looking at the line and the scenery ahead, i.e. what the driver sees.
Depending on what company makes the video, the videos will be shot in different ways. For example, Railscene productions will usually be full length videos of the line in questions with no editing other than a quick tape change! So if the line takes an hour and a half to travel on, then and hour and a half if what you are going to get. Also with Railscene there there are usually no other shots other than line line ahead and the soundtrack is just the sounds of the train and the conversation between the driver and the cameraman which is usually about the line being travelled on.
Video 125 Productions are slightly different in that they are edited down with lots of lineside shots of the trains as cutaways. They also have a professional narrator, such as TV's Fred Dinage or Rob Curling.
If you have never seen a cab ride video before then I'd suggest you start off on a Video 125 one first as they are more 'user friendly'. Do't be fooled into thinking that they are just for 'trainspotters', they are a great historical record of the railway line in question and you get to see some fantastic scenery to boot. Give it a download, you might like it and maybe learn something too.-)
Even if railways aren't your thing, it can be pretty cool putting one of these on, muting the sound and playing some mp3s!8-)
Remember if you do like what you've seen then do a web search and buy the DVD.
VHS > DVD > AVI
Again, this encode was done at a high bitrate due to try and maintain picture quality,as with the nature of a cab ride video, there is a great deal of movement in the picture.
Due to Bandwidth Limits set by my ISP, I can only seed at my max (35kbps or so) from 10pm-8am weekdays and 24hr weekends, so a little patience may be needed before its well seeded. :-)
