Tess of the D'Urbervilles
Series Repack – thanks to Hannibal for original uploads.
The fresh-faced and lovely Gemma Arterton shines as Thomas Hardy's titular heroine in the BBC's first ever dramatisation of this much-loved classic.
Ep 1 of 4
We get our first glimpse of the sweet, chaste and naive Tess as she country-dances on May Day with lots of other girls, all of them dressed in long white frocks. The sun is shining, the grass is green, everywhere is bathed in bucolic splendour and Tess doesn't have a care in the world. But her life veers off course when she meets the roguish Alec D'Urberville (Hans Matheson) and starts work on his mother's farm.
Ep 2 of 4
Tragedy strikes for Tess and which leaves home to work in a dairy, where she's so taken by parson's son and wistful harpist Angel Clare that she's soon taking surreptitious peeks at his bare backside. It's not long before they're strolling in the bluebells as Angel falls headfirst for Tess's charms. But will his dad approve of Angel's devotion when a more suitable match awaits him?
Ep 3 of 4
"Don't ask, don't tell" - if only Tess could keep her mouth shut but she tells her new husband about past events. Surely he will forgive her, as she forgave him his confessed dalliances? In the penultimate episode, it's obvious the clouds are gathering around our wraith-like heroine, though Arterton keeps Tess spirited and engaging, despite her staggering naivety.
Ep 4 of 4
Tess is at the end of her tether. "I am punished again and again and again," she wails in a letter to her absent husband. It looks like things couldn't get much worse in the Durbeyfield household when tragedy strikes and her family is forced from its home. Soon agony piles upon agony as Alec D'Urberville starts sniffing around Tess once more.
