Customer Reviews of 'Robert Newman - The Dependence Day Video [1994]'
A man on the edge (18. May 2004)
The Mary Whitehouse Experience was a strange combination : a couple of script-writers (Punt and Dennis) provided the wonderful "Milky-Milky" man and pretty much kept to themselves. David Baddiel was a sort of low-rent Ben Elton without the pomposity. "History Today" was probably the last truly funny thing he was involved with before running off to join his close friend Frank Skinner in a series of increasingly desperate and moronic colaborations, culminating in the cringe-inducing LadFest that was "Fantasy Football". Skinner has since pretty much stuck to this formula in a series of attempts to prove he is an all-round entertainer and not just a second-division stand-up. And then there was Rob Newman. The frightening one. The one where you never knew if he was being serious or not. His solo performances were mainly aimed at student audiences, and Dependence Day is a perfect example. Newman is the one laughing because his audience is unable to break the Politically Correct shackles with which they have bound themselves. "You're not the tolerant free-thinkers you kid yourselves you are", is what he is saying to them. "You're every bit as conservative and bound by convention as the parents you rebel against". Listen to the uneasy silence as he ends his story of Perth Prison with "....and they want us to give them toilets!". His alter-ego, Jarvis, also receives mixed reactions : his audience want to laugh but are afraid to be thought guilty by association with such a non-PC character.Newman doesn't care. He says what he thinks, and no mindset imposed from outside will change him.
The 60s had The Goons, the 70s had Python, the 80s Not The Nine O'Clock News. Mary Whitehouse did it again in the 90s and, like it's predecessors, fell into the same trap. Within a very short time they all became part of the Establishment they sought to undermine. Kidding themselves they had brought about the changes they desired they took the money and lined up at the TV company award ceremonies as if it were the most natural thing in the world. With two exceptions : Spike Milligan and Rob Newman. Two men on the far borders of sanity, who believed in comedy as an art. Personal.Immortal. And certainly not something to be bent and perverted by something as transient as politics. Men of vision who refused to be diverted from their purpose by the fashionable thinking of the day.
Ben Elton now collaborates on stage musicals and saccharine-sweet "romantic-comedy" films. Power to the people indeed.
