STAGE 5 DETAILS:
Date: Thursday, September 3, 2009
Start And Finish: Tarragona → Vinaròs
Distance: 174 km
Stage Profile: Following their experiences in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, the cyclists will be able to rest for a day and travel to Spain. However, there will not be a lot of time for relaxation. The competition restarts on Thursday 3rd September with a 174 km stage that will link the Catalan city of Tarragona with the coastal city of Vinaròs (Castellon).
The race’s entry into Spain will see the appearance of the first important climb: The second category climb at Fatxas. However, the two climbs that are not worth mountain points will be much more exciting than Fatxas: one near Senia area and another known as Alto de La Ermita, located a mere 6 kilometres from the finish and whose narrow sections are sure to provoke nervousness both among the sprinters and among the GC favourites and give rise to an interesting fight for the best position in the bunch. Those in search of a stage victory will have the chance to attack both on the climb and on the narrow descent. Therefore, it is sure to be a day of intense emotions.
Previous editions: Tarragona has hosted 13 stage starts since its first inclusion in 1936. Vinaròs also has an extensive history as part of the race, having participated since 1967. Max Van Heesweijk won a sprint finish in 2005, whilst Juanma Garate, the winner on Mont Ventoux in the year’s Tour, won the sprint finish of the 2001 Tarragona – Vinaròs stage.
