The self-titled debut by Jacob's Dream provides the perfect balance of energy, melody and bombast that results in great power metal. It's not too rough, it's not too flowery, and it's not too cheesy. The vocalist sounds like a cross between Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween) and Geoff Tate (Queensrÿche) without sounding too much like a clone of either one and he's not afraid to rip off a high note when the feel of the song demands it. While the band is considered a Christian metal band, despite many songs having positive lyrics, there's nothing preachy about them at all.

The album kicks off with the anthemic "Kinescope", which features a heavy keyboard riff reminiscent of Dio's "Rainbow in the Dark". It blends into the more atmospheric "Funambulism". Then a return to the tradition power metal sound, "Scape Goat" is an obvious blast at anyone who wanted to blame music and other media for the Columbine school shooting. "Mad House of Cain", a weird track that's a creepy, semi-acoustic horror story of sorts, has the vocalist showing off his diverse range as he sings much lower to amplify the haunted feeling of the song. Other highlights of the album include "Love and Sorrow", the age-old tale of lost love; "Crusade", a seemingly harsh satire about religious power; and "The Gathering", a catchy song about destiny. Some of the songs near the end will seem to blend together, but none should leave you bored or otherwise uninterested.

This album provides for an hour of incredibly good power metal. This is up there with some of the metal power metal albums of all-time and I can almost say for certain that this will be Jacob's Dream's best album, not because they changed their sound or I think they're heading in the wrong direction, but rather because this will be so hard to top.
