Mechanic Hans Behnke (Paul Esser) wants to join the Nazi party to advance his career. But he changes his mind after some of his Jewish neighbors are carted away to labor camps. He begins printing resistance pamphlets -- which leads to a tragic rift with his son Hellmuth (Karl Heinz Deickert), a member of the Hitler Youth.
