This is a brief how to install XP on Compaq c700 model C756CA laptop.

First change boot order to boot from cd/dvd drive first then also remember to disable SATA driver in the BIOS for the Hard drive.
If you do not disable the driver then windows will not see any hard drives connected when installing XP.

After installation is complete, go to the HP site and download xp drivers from this link:

only 4 drivers on that webpage (HP is really terrible with releasing driver support, I guess they want to make money and by not releasing any info or drivers they force customers to phone/contact them for support.

After speaking with customer support, I was given these links for the rest of the drivers.

To install audio / modem drivers, first download and install Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio (sp32646):

Conexant CX20549-12 Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows XP

Note: Installing this driver may result in an error.
But continue with the following steps to get the audio driver installed correctly.
1. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
2. Right click on "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus" and click Update driver.
3. Select "Install from a list or specific location".
4. Click Next. Then select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install".
daisy: 5. Click Next and then select "Sound, video and game controller" from the list.
6. Click Next and then click Have Disk.
7. Click Browse C:\swsetup\sp32400 folder and select the .inf (wisxxxx) file and click open and Continue with the onscreen instructions.

Conexant CX20548 Modem Driver for Microsoft Windows XP

6. Click Next and then click Have Disk.
7. Click Browse C:\swsetup\sp36089 folder and select winxp folder and select the SprtHD5m.inf file and click open and continue with the onscreen instructions.

To install the SM bus controller (if it's already installed and working fine then don't do this), you must go to intel's website and download the Intel? Chipset Software Installation Utility infinst_autol.zip file and unzip it and run the setup

Hope this will help somebody because it took me 2 days to get this sorted out.
I've included the files that were available in feb-08.
