'An exceptional awareness of Purcell's gifts is evident in Das Alte Werk's compilation of sacred and instrumental pieces (plus three songs as fillers) extracted from four Telefunken records dating back to 1968. Leonhardt is at his very persuasive best in the verse anthems. The long-breathed instrumental ritornellos in Rejoice in the Lord alway are acutely balanced alongside the choral sections and the whole is paced in a manner conductive to textual clarity. In each of the anthems King's College Choir emerge (in a far dryer acoustic than they are used to) as a tightly-woven consort. The gentle blend suits Leonhardt's dignified if restrained approach to My heart is inditing. Occasionally a riper boys' sound is needed but not at the expense of the purity and focus which is employed imploringly to such good effect.'
