The title is a pun which reflects the film's dramatic structure, linking the 1980 Quebec referendum to Japanese Noh theatre.

The film is set in 1970 at the height of the FLQ bombings inMontreal. The central character, Sophie (Anne-Marie Cadieux), is anactress working in Japan at Expo '70; her boyfriend Michel (AlexisMartin) is an FLQ member preparing for a bombing.

Forbidding title aside, this film by Quebec's Robert Lepage has apositive attitude -- though it opens with an example of the starktraditional Japanese theater it's named after, in spirit it takes afterthe Feydeau farce that is its centerpiece. In 1970 Montreal, Michel(Alexis Martin), a radical writer, harbors three Quebec LiberationFront friends hiding from a police crackdown. Meanwhile, at the OsakaWorld's Fair, Michel's girlfriend, Sophie (Anne-Marie Cadieux), anactress in a theater troupe with the Quebec pavilion, discovers she'spregnant and debates whether to return home. And so Nô goes, bouncingfrom one country to another, with Japan in color and Canada, on theverge of martial law, in black and white. Michel points out spellingerrors in his terrorist friends' manifesto and contributes a clock totheir time bomb; Sophie goes out to dinner with the boorish culturalattaché and his wife and drinks too much sake; and Lepage exploresissues of independence and collectivism, theater and life. Sometimesthe symbolism gets glib: a Buñuelian stage moment, an automatic-photobooth that snaps pictures of each of the main characters at keymoments, and a coda set in 1980 in which the word "no" takes on broaderpolitical implications all edge from quirky to coy. But the sly,subdued performances (the lanky Cadieux is like a combination ofVanessa Redgrave and Lucille Ball) make Nô worth saying yes to.
