Marianne está felizmente casada con Markus, un director de orquesta con el que tiene una hija, Isabelle. Todo va bien en su matrimonio hasta que David, el mejor amigo de Markus, y Marianne inician una relación amorosa. Una noche la tragedia llama a la puerta de los dos amantes. Markus lo sabe todo. A partir de este momento todos iniciarán un peligroso juego de trágicas e inesperadas consecuencias. Nadie es inocente, se manipula a aquellos que se quiere, los secretos salen a la luz y todo el mundo resulta infiel a los demás.

The movie is about a messy affair from "Bergman's" past, and it is about the creative process. As it begins, the old man (Erland Josephson) has writing paper on the desk before him and is talking with an actress (Lena Endre). It becomes clear that this actress is not physically present. The dialogue suggests the director has enlisted this woman, or her memory, to help him think through a story he is writing. But she is also the woman the story is about. And she sometimes seems to be reading her story from his notes--as if he created her, and she exists only in his words.

The woman is named Marianne. She is married to Markus (Thomas Hanzon), a symphony conductor, often away on tours. They have a daughter of 8 or 9, Isabelle (Michelle Gylemo). David (Krister Henriksson) is Markus' best friend. One night while Markus is away, David asks Marianne if he may sleep with her. She laughs him off, but then agrees they can share the same bed as brother and sister. Soon they have hurtled into a passionate affair, unforeseen and heedless.

It is clear that David is "Bergman" at an earlier age. He is a film director with vague projects in mind, he has long been attracted to Marianne, and he is, let us say, a louse. What becomes clear during the course of the film is that Markus is no saint, either, and that he uses his daughter as a hostage in the unpleasantness that results.

Trolösa utgår från en verklig händelse i Ingmar Bergmans liv. Vi får här följa ERLAND JOSEPHSON i rollen som den äldre Bergman. LENA ENDRE, en skådespelerska, som besöker honom under manusskrivandet. Hon spelar även kvinnan han älskat. KRISTER HENRIKSSON spelar älskaren och THOMAS HANZON hennes världsberömde äkta man. Jag, LIV ULLMANN, är regissören och som jag ser det, är ljuset i historien, att vi kan glömma timmarna som var fulla av lidelse. De vi aldrig må glömma är vad detta lärt oss. Allt fler väljer att leva i trolöshet. De moraliska påbuden försvinner. Två män och en kvinna önskar "leka en vuxenlek" där de glömmer vad som är ont och vad som är gott. Plötsligt rasar allt samman. Tragedin är ett faktum. De är samtliga trolösa mot varandra men offret är barnet som sitter i mitten utan att förstå sin egen roll i de vuxnas lek.
