Lange, melancholische melodieën, waar Bellini zo bekend om is, zijn te vinden in een aantal aria’s in deze opera. Opvallend is, dat Bellini aan het begin van de belangrijkste aria’s gebruik maakt van solo-instrumenten, zoals harp, hoorn, klarinet of cello om de gevoelens van de geliefden kracht bij te zetten. Frappant is overigens dat zijn meest geliefde, alhoewel nooit geëvenaarde, voorbeeld Mozart is. De uitvoering van "La Sonnambula" door het voor mij "gouden duo" Joan Sutherland en Luciano Pavarotti met het National Philharmonic Orchestra o.l.v. Richard Bonynge (opname januari l980 in "The Kingsway Hall" te Londen) getuigt van een grote inzet maar vooral van een tintelende vitaliteit. Bellini had de zeer hoge tenorpartijen in deze opera (in 1831) geschreven op de specifieke stem van zijn lievelingstenor Rubini. De (toen 15 jaar jongere) stem van Pavarotti blijft ook in de "hogere registers" prachtig vol van klankkleur in deze opname van "La Sonnambula".
