Why I find that game still great, despite the old DOS gameplay and graphics: The story is one of the best of all games I know - it's worth to write a book or make a movie from it. The dialogue between you and the aliens is sometimes so funny, sometimes miraculous or even frightening, in any case entertaining, especially with the spoken voice in this version. During exploring the star map you can do a lot of things, which effect the storyline, but don't lead necessarily to a defeat.
You can spend hours to fly alone from star system to star system to collect ressources or you can engage alien races in battle (the focus is on forming an alliance, but some alien races always attack...). And, did I mention - the aliens and with them their ships (which you can fly all in the 'Melee' part) are so diverse and often funny in their special way, that I'm still delighted about this game, although I've played it about 10 to 15 times completely.
