Getting Around the Rogers Bit Torrent Blockade
Users tinker with different ports, with mixed results
Posted 2006-01-11 16:30:34
"Changing your BitTorrent client port to 1720 completely fixes the BitTorrent throttling issue for Rogers users," one user writes in. "I believe that port is used by the VOIP service from the company, Sprint Canada, that they acquired. Regardless, it makes a difference of 99.9% speed increase for me." There's been mixed results on this front according to our users, likely because the company is employing slightly different techniques in different markets, depending how strained local networks are. This thread in our Rogers forum explores what different ports users have tried, and their success or failure with each.4 comments
More ISPs Blocking Port 25 Inbound?
Users indicate Cox, BellSouth now employing tactic
Posted 2006-01-11 14:37:55
Port 25/tcp is used for SMTP, the outgoing mail protocol, and is often blocked by ISPs to cut down on spam (whether intentional or due to infection). The block prevents users from sending outgoing mail via any third party mail-hosting services. We've watched what was once somewhat of a scattered practice quickly become an industry standard over the last few years.

The tactic is generally a good idea, and only causes trouble when the ISP fails to clearly inform users of the change, allowing them to employ fairly easy solutions. Some ISPs allow the port to be re-opened upon request, while others - like Comcast - only apply the filters when dealing with spamming accounts in the first place.

Other ISPs take that tactic a bit further, blocking inbound port 25 traffic. story continues..28 comments
BellSouth Gift-Card Promotion
$25-$75 discounts for signing up for services
Posted 2006-01-11 13:22:27
In addition to the five dollar price-cut off their 3Mbps tier we mentioned yesterday, BellSouth has unveiled a gift-card promotion they're pushing in order to get users to snuggle up to some of their bundles. According to the company's press release, you'll receive gift-cards for service ranging from $25-$75, depending on what additional services (DirecTV, Cingular wireless phone service, etc.) you sign up for.6 comments

Rogers: Get Less, Pay More
Bit Torrent throttled, Usenet yanked, prices hiked
Posted 2006-01-11 09:37:10
Not a great few months for subscribers of Canada's Rogers cable broadband service. Customers first learned that free Usenet access was to be pulled under the rather lame guise of fighting child pornography. Meanwhile, our forum users have been complaining since December that the company has decided to throttle all Bit Torrent traffic. Now that users are actually getting less service for their dollar, the company is apparently considering a series of rate hikes for both television and broadband service.34 comments
Lompoc Broadband Launch Delayed
Testing finds trouble with Wi-Fi network
Posted 2006-01-11 09:18:23
A city-wide wireless network that was supposed to go live in Lompoc, California on January 17 has been postponed indefinitely, after the city didn't see the kind of network performance they expected during testing. As we've noted, the city was also considering deploying its own fiber for a triple-play system. story continues..7 comments

No Constitutional Right to Spam
Company's lawsuit against filtering University stalls
Posted 2006-01-10 18:48:57
Not only did the Can Spam Act have a minimal impact on spam, at least one operation tried to use the law to argue they had a constitutional right to spam. Dating service spammers Buffalo Ventures sued the University of Texas for "violating their constitutional rights", after the University filtered the company's spam, which the company claims adhered to all aspects of the federal law. story continues..35 comments
Gigabit Speeds Via BPL & White LEDs
From Penn State researchers and the land of the strange

Penn State engineers have shown that a white-LED system for lighting and high data-rate indoor wireless communications, coupled with broadband over power-lines (BPL), can offer transmission capacities that "exceed DSL or cable and are more secure than RF", claims this University press release. The report claims the system could theoretically deliver wireless bit rates of a gigabit per second. story continues..25 comments
AT&T: 2 Tier Web 'Beneficial' to Customers
'Business models are changing'

"We’re not going to block our customers from accessing any content from their broadband or DSL connection,” says AT&T CFO Rick Lindner at a Citigroup conference (see Webcast, via IP Democracy). “However, the reality is that business models are changing and I think there are opportunities - to enter into commercial arrangements that are beneficial to both companies and beneficial to customers as well.” How? AT&T CEO Ed Whitacre ignited controversy in October when he suggested Google should pay a premium to get decent network performance from AT&T's pipes.75 comments
Users Actually Read Qwest's TOS
Qwest: 'Misinformation' circulating in cyberspace
Posted on 2006-01-10 15:10:05
As we mentioned Monday, our users have been complaining since December about a new Qwest user agreement that threatens to charge users $5 for each spam email a user's PC sends. Users wonder: what if it's the result of oh, say a Windows WMF vulnerability infection? There was a ruckus over at Ars Technica, which was picked up by Top Tech News. According to the top tech news report, Qwest has called the reports "misinformation circulating in cyberspace," and says that while the AUP is new, the $5 spam policy has existed for a while. story continues..33 comments
Rupert Murdoch, DirecTV Wireless Broadband
Murdoch makes his play....
Posted on 2006-01-10 14:10:57
News Corp's Rupert Murdoch recently invaded the UK broadband scene with his purchase of EasyNet, a DSL provider with 2,600 miles of fiber and 36 POPs. In November, whispers began to surface that Murdoch was looking to get into the American broadband business too, after gobbling up a number of US online media outlets (IGN, Myspace, adware vendor Intermix).

Now some details are starting to emerge, and it it appears his plan it to spend a cool billion in conjunction with DirecTV to start a wireless broadband ISP, reports Bloomberg News. No hard details about what technology the companies will use, but it appears as if Wimax will be the front-runner - recall DirecTV executive comments from last August. story continues..40 comments
1-2k US IPv6 Users
Compared to 200-500k in Japan
Posted on 2006-01-10 12:27:34
"Let me reiterate how pathetic we are in the U.S.," notes Alex Lightman, chief executive and president for IPv6 Summit, in a piece on IPv6 at Techweb. "In the U.S., we have between 1,000 to 2,000 IPv6 users, whereas Japan has between 200,000 and 500,000." The piece offers up a pretty good projected timeline for American IPv6 deployment: federal agencies must have upgrade plans ready by February, with compliance by 2008. story continues..72 comments

Siemens IPTV in Maine

Posted on 2006-01-10 09:19:32
As we've discussed, Microsoft has essentially locked up a significant chunk of the world's residential IPTV market by striking deals with major telcos worldwide (Bell Canada, SBC (AT&T), British Telecom, Reliance Infocomm, Swisscom, Telecom Italia, BellSouth, and Verizon), while Siemens sits and waits, hoping Microsoft fails. Siemens meanwhile says they've launched IPTV service in Maine, via Oxford Networks. story continues..8 comments
