THE OTHER FINAL
It's the summer of 2002. While millions of television watchers all over the world are excitedly awaiting the final of the World Cup football in Japan, the two countries with the lowest FIFA ranking are preparing for the other final.
These are the teams of the Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan and that of Montserrat, an island in the Caribbean plagued by volcanic eruptions. Two entirely different worlds, and two countries that were unaware of each other's existence...until they were invited for this alternative World Cup match! In The Other Final the players of both teams are followed in the preparations of this match and also a portrayal is given of the daily life in both countries.
Even though the football match was what led to this documentary, it is the cultural differences and similarities between the two countries that are the theme of this film. The football-players from Montserrat have never seen snow and have travelled for five days just to be able to play this match. Culture, music, religion, dreams and sports are the main focus in The Other Final.
The idea for this film was born out of frustration that the Dutch team failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup. Matthijs de Jongh, the Dutchman who organized this highly unique event, became acquainted with these worst football players of the world and discovered that losing a football match is not the worst that can happen. The Other Final is the touching and, occasionally, comical proof that the passion for the game, unhindered by commercial interests, can bring people closer together.
