The average American will live for 76 years, the average Brit manages only two years more. But there are a few communities where life expectancy outstretches this by ten or twenty years. They suffer only a fraction of age-related diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's and heart disease. In these places a 100-year-old could be mistaken for a 70-year-old. They don't look their age or act their age, they live independently and have proved it can be possible to do anything from running a marathon, to being a karate master to waterskiing, all at 100.

How to Live to 101 goes in search of the answer by following a number of characters from different communities, looking into their genes, their lifestyle and their diet to reveal what makes them different. From the sake-drinking Ushi, who lives on the Japanese island of Okinawa and has just celebrated her 103rd birthday, to Marge the Californian who remembers the 1906 San Fransisco earthquake and likes cycling, the programme reveals what we can learn from their experience. And it takes a contrasting look at the impact of modern lifestyles - in Okinawa for example where the youth are swapping their steamed rice for MacDonalds, could longevity become a thing of the past?
