In a true story based on her Mass Observation diary, housewife Nella Last is trapped in a difficult marriage and dreads her beloved son leaving to fight in the Second World War.

She draws strength from the diary, writing down all the things she cannot say to her controlling husband (David Threlfall - Shameless; Patriot Games). Meanwhile the support and companionship she finds at the Women's Voluntary Service, in particular from the formidable Mrs Waite (Stephanie Cole - Tenko; Doc Marten) bring her joy and liberation during the difficult years of the war.

Synopsis
Nella Last is an unhappy housewife in Northern England during World War II who decides to write a diary. She finds comfort at the Women's Voluntary Service, aiding the war effort.
