STAGE 1 DETAILS:

Start And Finish: Assen (NL) → Assen (NL)
Distance: 4.8 km
Stage Profile: This is the most international Vuelta in history. This is how the 2009 Vuelta will always be remembered, and the fact is that new international dimension to this year’s edition will make for spectacular racing from the first stage: an individual time trial in the Dutch town of Assen. Or, more specifically, a 4.8 km individual effort around Assen’s “TT Circuit”.
The “Cathedral”, as the greatly-admired circuit is known by motorcycling fans, will play host to the 1st stage on Saturday, 29 August: the first rider is scheduled to set-off at 15.35, whilst the arrival of the last of the competitors is scheduled at 18.50. This will be first major opportunity for the time-trial specialist and the first real test for those aiming for the GC.
Previous editions: The Vuelta has never visited the Netherlands before, which means that the first stages of this year’s race will cover new ground. In 1997, however, the Spanish race started in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, this being the clearest example of the race’s previous international excursions. Lars Michaelsen was the winner of that Portuguese first stage.
