Top 50 Showbiz Comebacks
Sky One (106)
Sunday 29th June 2008
21:00 to 23:00 (2 hours long)
Yet another compulsively watchable list show, this time about stars who have made a triumphant return to the stratosphere. Christopher Biggins presents and, as a winner of I'm a Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here! - often a last-ditch effort for participants to up their popularity - he's an apt choice. Nor is he the only jungle veteran: Peter Andre, Jason Donovan and Tony Blackburn also appear. Alongside the ageing pin-ups are soap characters, bands, musicals, the Osbournes, the royal family - anyone and everything that's made a comeback in the last decade. It's a reminder of the fallible nature of fame but, better than that, it's an extended gossip session on the topsy-turvy careers of your favourite stars.
Savouring the spotlight, these stars and shows may take a knock or two, but they never stay down for long. With quite a few contenders for the prestigious title, who, or indeed what, will be crowned comeback king or queen?
In for a shout is Stephen Fry, a comedy genius possessing the driest of wits. In the mid-90s, he suffered a mental breakdown and fled the country. Many believed that that was the last we'd see of him, that he'd faded into self-enforced obscurity. But against all odds, he made a spectacular return, becoming a British institution and, more impressively, connoisseur of Twinings tea. Fry, we raise a pinky to you.
How about Gladiators, the television event of the 90s? After a 10-year absence, the David/Goliath contest has been resurrected amid a media blitz, stomping onto Sky One to become a spandex-clad sensation once more. And yes, the foam fingers have made a triumphant return too.
Finally, a possible top-ten contender is David Beckham, a man who invoked the nation's rage, becoming a hate figure after his sending off during the 1998 World Cup. In a complete turnaround of fortune, Beckham is now one of the most photographed personalities in the world, a recognised sporting legend and style icon. Never less than compulsive, can you predict the top-spot clincher?
