In this follow-up series to his previous hit, Alexei Sayle's Stuff, the comic makes a bold claim: 'I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. Not unless you're expecting something other than a fat man in a suit shouting at you for half an hour.'

And so it was that his new show in fact capitalised on the successful mix of sketches and stand-up that had already made him a veritable TV star.

But while 'All New' might have been a slight overstatement, Sayle certainly did introduce a range of fresh elements, including a set of recurring characters whose appearances peppered the series.

The most notable of these was Bobby Chariot, an appalling fictional warm-up man played by Sayle who fills in whenever the show temporarily 'breaks down' for supposed technical reasons.

Resembling a horrific hybrid of the worst of Ken Dodd and Les Dawson, Chariot would deliver cheap jokes to the sparse studio audience before turning on them when they didn't respond positively.

Other regular characters included Egbert and Bill (parodying modern art duo Gilbert and George) and Sayle's own caricature of the then Labour leader John Smith, which grew out of an increased slant towards political material (a trait which Sayle was already well-known for).

Topical subjects such as class, Amnesty International and the Tory government would easily crop up alongside the trademark rapid-fire sketches, which had been given an added dose of surrealism by the hiring of new writers in Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews (whose next project would be Father Ted).

And in a technique borrowed from The Two Ronnies, both series of The All New Alexei Sayle Show featured a serialised sketch, be it the spoof Aussie soap 'Psycho Ward 11' or cult sci-fi parody 'Drunk in Time' (co-starring Jenny Agutter and Peter Capaldi).

With its blend of the tried-and-tested and successful new items The All New Alexei Sayle Show had tweaked a successful formula, refreshing it to produce another consistently funny sketch vehicle for a natural TV comedy front-man.
