Shakespeare The Animated Tales Series 1 (1992) [DVDRip (DivX)] preview 0

OVERVIEW:
Embraced by audiences in over 50 countries, acclaimed by critics and recipient of 3 Emmy Awards and a New York Festival Gold Award, Shakespeare the Animated Tales is an invigorating collection of 12 of the bard's most beloved tales, brought to life in specially commisioned 30 minute adaptions by some of the worlds leading cinematic artists and technicians.

Adapted by renowned author and Shakespeare scholar Leon Garfield, in collaboration with leading academic lights, these beautiful dramatic and rewarding tales are masterly abridged renditions of the classic texts, fully faithful to the narrative and language that makes Shakespeare the most beloved and respected playwright history has ever produced.

Shakespeare: The Animated Tales (also known as The Animated Shakespeare) comprised two six-part television series, first broadcast in 1992 and 1994. Each episode was an animated half-hour adaptation of one of Shakespeare's plays.

The series was commissioned by BBC Wales for the Welsh language channel S4C (although it was commissioned in English). Production was co-ordinated by the Dave Edwards studio in Cardiff, and executed by well-known Russian directors and animators in Moscow.

The series was noted for its wide range of animation techniques. The animation was done completely in Moscow at Christmas Films Studio, by a selection of Russia's most renowned animators.

Series 1 (BBC2, 9 November–14 December 1992)

* A Midsummer Night's Dream — dir. Robert Saakiants, cel animation with Daniel Massey as Oberon, Bernard Hill as Nick Bottom and Peter Postlethwaite as Quince.
http://thebox.bz/details.php?id=27488

The Beauty of cel animation is that it can make the impossible seem possible. So the spiritis of the haunted wood and the bewitching transformations of Titiana, Oberon and the innocent tradesman Bottom come to life with a treatment that compliments Sahekespeare's spectacular imagery.

Director & Designer - Roger Saakiants

* The Tempest — dir. Stanislav Sokolov, stop-motion puppets with Timothy West as Prospero, Alun Armstrong as Caliban and Martin Jarvis as The Narrator
http://thebox.bz/details.php?id=28379

A marvellous and terrifying island, peopled by spirits and monsters, is the ideal setting for demonstrating how puppets can become extroadinarily convincing 'actors'. Caliban becomes an almost huiman monster and Prospero's magic brings the spitit Ariel to life in a way that no stage performance could ever hope to achieve.

* Macbeth — dir. Nikolai Serebryakov, cel animation with Brian Cox as Macbeth and Zoe Wanamaker as Lady Macbeth.
http://thebox.bz/details.php?id=26619

The all enveloping evil of Shakespeare's bloodiest work is captured with arresting and graphic intensity by powerful cel animation. Awash with murder, madness and dark forces it is easy to understand the superstition that causes those in the theatre to refer to Macbeth with an unusual respect.

Director & Designer - Nikolai Serebriakov

Featuring the voices of Brian Cox, Zoe Wanamaker, Clive Merison, Patrick Brennan, Laurence Payne, Mary Wimbush, Val Lorraine, Emma Gregory, Ronald Pierce, John Baddley and David Acton.

http://thebox.bz/details.php?id=26699

The tension and romance fely by two young citizens of Verona, opressed by family rivalries yet bound by an all consuming love is captured brilliantly in a rich and vibrant cel animation rendering of the worlds most beloved and best known love story.

Director - Ephim Gambourg. Designer - Igor Makaorov

Featuring the voices of Linus Roache, Clare Holman, Greg Hicks, Charles Kay, Brenda Bruce and Garard Green.

* Hamlet — dir. Natalya Orlova, paint-on-glass with Nicholas Farrell as Hamlet, John Shrapnel as Claudius/The King and Tilda Swinton as Ophelia.
http://thebox.bz/details.php?id=26631

All animation techniques are painstaking, but that of painting on glass is especially so. This unusual medium succeeds impressively in capturing the ghostly presence of Hamlets father and the agonised indecision of Hamlet himself, in this classic depiction of corruption, madness and revenge.

Director - Natalia Orlova. Designer - Peter Makarov

Featuring the voices of Nicholas Farrell, John Shrapnel, Susan Fleetwood, Diren Thomas, Tilda Swinton, John Warner and Darren Bell.

http://thebox.bz/details.php?id=27378

Dour Malvolio, beautiful Countess Olivia, the disguised Viola and every other actor are played by sophisticated puppets in this charming rendition of Shakespeare's golden comedy. Achieving an exceptional flueny of movement for stop-frame animation, this film is utterly absorbing and remarkably convincing.
