Helvetica: A Documentary Film by Gary Hustwit– La Helvética fue desarrollada por Max Miedinger en 1957 para la Haas Type Foundry en Munchenstein, Suiza. A finales de los años 50, el diseño europeo asistió al renacer de viejas tipografías sin serifa [«de palo»] tales como la Akzidenz Grotesk. El director de las Haas Eduard Hoffmann encargó a Max Miedinger ex-empleado de la firma y entonces diseñador freelance, diseñar un tipo gráfico moderno sin serifas para añadr a su catálogo. El resultado fue la Neue Haas Grotesk, nombre que más tarde se cambió al de Helvética, derivado de Helvetia que era el nombre en latín de Suiza, cuando las compañías Stempel y Linotype comenzaron a comercailizarla internacionalmente en 1961.

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.
