This autobiographical play, first brought to the stage in 1970, eloquently shows, John Mortimer’s Father as an eccentric barrister who became blind after a freak accident. Everyday he goes up to town with his wife, Mother and is a demon of aggressive cross-examination in the courtroom. But at home he just potters around, inspecting the large garden whose glories he cannot see but which nevertheless protects his privacy. He hates visitors.

Father’s blindness is never mentioned by his family and Son grows up lonely and unable to put into words his need for love. Sent away to boarding school, he survives the crazy atmosphere of this English institution by making up stories. When, as a young man, he meets Elizabeth, she injects a note of reality into his life and challenges the silences of his family.

This adaptation by John Mortimer takes his original stage play and recreates it for Television. It stars Laurence Olivier in excellent form as the tyrannical Father figure, whose son, played brilliantly by Alan Bates, is forever dominated by the old man right through and beyond his Father's death.

The film was made by Thames Television in 1982, which was back in the day when the ITV network could make proper telly if they put their mind to it - and boy do they put their mind to it here!

Interestingly the location for much of the outdoor shots - of which there are many - was filmed in John Mortimer's own house. This is the house that was built by his father and is where the story of John and his relationship with his father was played out for real.
