There's something touching about the sight of a hitherto bullish entrepreneur gasping in panic as he fluffs a speech about projected annual percentages in what looks like a dilapidated warehouse. Actually, that's a lie. It's not touching. It's hilarious. And such scenes are legion in tonight's edition of Dragons' Den - the first in a new series of the peerless business showdown. Among the gulping cottage industrialists facing the sighs, smirks and scowls of Peter Jones (above, second right) and co are the ashen mastermind behind a tiny travel cushion; a passive-aggressive ex-vacuum-cleaner-salesman; and a terrified indie band who "got to number three in the Austrian charts". Oh, and there's also the most spectacularly ill-advised "comedy" pitch you'll ever see. Ever. Go get 'em, Dragons!

No matter how sneering and dismissive the Dragons are of their supplicants, the programme always manages to find more folk to climb those cruel stairs into the Den. Where do they find these fools, with their boundless optimism and easily punctured financial projections? Don't they know their dreams are about to be trashed for public amusement? Don't they care? This week's lambs to the slaughter include a jeweller who hopes to attract the series' highest investment yet, a purple-haired professor from Poole, and a serial inventor looking to convince the Dragons that her crime-stopping products are worth an investment of 275,000 pounds. But there's always room for a touch of slapstick, too: tonight, Theo Paphitis test-drives an innovative roller skate. Sadly, preview DVDs were unavailable.

Another batch of hopefuls climb the stairs to the Den for a bout of bad puns (Theo Paphitis being the main culprit) and bullying at the hands of the semi-house- trained millionaires. The Dragons have become so annoyingly self-satisfied lately that the main pleasure now is watching the rare occasions when they turn on each other and fight for a slice of someone's business - particularly if we see Peter Jones's look of sickened rage when an entrepreneur rejects his offer in favour of someone else's. There were no preview DVDs, so I can't say if there are any such treats tonight, but we do know the investment opportunities include soft toys based on roadkill animals, eco-computers, a high-wire adventure park and a new spin on outdoor cooking - the Barbeskew.
