Made to mark the 60th Anniversary of the end of World War Two the History Channel commissioned Oxford-based independant production company, Red Admiral to produce this hour long documentary telling the story of how Britain returned to peacetime following the surrender of Germany and later Japan in 1945. Veterans recall how the first moments post-war peace included many joyful memories but was also tinged with great sadness. Sir Norman Wisdom and Tony Benn are among the many ex-servicemen re-living their experiences of demob life. The programme shows the euphoria which swept Britain in 1945 would be short-lived with many people feeling their lives had lost a sense of purpose and country plunged in to a decade of austerity.
