* Episode 3 : THE FORGOTTEN ARMY - PART ONE: Canadians in Italy, 1943

Finally, the men of the First Canadian Division get an opportunity to fight. In July 1943-in a huge amphibious operation-they land on the beaches of Sicily, in the Allied invasion of Nazi Germany's principal ally, Benito Mussolini's Fascist Italy.

In the mountain town of Assoro, the Canadians outflank the main German defense line, overpowering the German defenders, occupying an ancient Norman mountaintop castle, and repulsing two days of desperate German counter-attacks.

Then, in mainland Italy, the Canadians are among the first Allied troops to land on Continental Europe. One of them is Stan Scislowski. In some of the most violent and heroic actions of the war-at the Moro River, the "Gully" and "Casa Berardi"-the Canadians fight their way to the gates of the city of Ortona, capture headlines and open the way to the fortress.
