Information

From a remote corner of Western Asia comes a story of the rise of consciousness in the human brain. In northern Iraq, beyond its rivers and rocky slopes, lie the plains where a remarkable group of human fossils rested undisturbed for sixty thousand years. Today, the American anthropologist who discovered those bones returns, worried that ethnic wars have put the excavation site in jeopardy. Forty years ago, Doctor Ralph Selecki, then at Columbia University, explored the caves at Shanidar where he unearthed an image of ancient man that profoundly changed the way we saw our ancestors. The professor discovered a skull - a Neanderthal skull. Strangely, it was covered with microscopic pollen from the flowers of thistle, groundsel, spiraea and hollyhock, among others. The same pollen dust covered the rest of the weathered skeleton, suggesting that his family and friends had deliberately gathered the flowers and laid them in bunches on the dead body. These mourners left behind the earliest known signs of man's awareness of death. Based on Doctor Selecki's findings, Neanderthals seemed to possess what we have come to call a mind. By itself, the mind tends to defy definition. It helps when we can name some of its attributes: introspection, empathy, a sense of past and future, reflection, an inner voice. However, we can not really say when the mind suddenly popped up on the evolutionary scene. Certainly, the burial site at Shanidar indicates an early grasp of symbolic meaning and ritual, but the search for the mind's origins is really twofold. It involves time (when did it appear?), and space (where exactly is it, anyway?). Is it here? - where we point when we ask ourselves, "Am I losing my mind?" or "Maybe it's all in my head." But all that's there that we know of is our brain. In our search for the mind, here we begin a journey into the most complex structure in the known universe: the human brain.
