8000 years ago in the Atacama Desert of
northern Chile many tiny children, babies
and even foetuses were painstakingly
mummified after death by their people the
Chinchorro. These are the oldest known
mummified remains. A team of scientists from
the University of Tarapaca hopes to uncover
the secrets of these mummified babies.

Recent research has shown that the levels of
arsenic in the north of Chile are
exceptionally high. We travel with the
research team into the desert to test the
levels of arsenic present in the river water.
Hair samples are taken from inhabitants of
a rural community and sent, with samples
from the mummies, for analysis to measure
the levels of arsenic. These toxic
environmental conditions would have been the
same thousands of years ago for the
Chinchorro, so infant mortality and
miscarriage rates were likely to have been
much higher than any other Andean population.
And the fact that the first mummies were
all infants suggested that arsenic poisoning
is the reason for this mortuary practice an
ancient expression of grief.
