Dr Jemilah Mahmood and life after the Tsunami
Airing 29th December 2006
Nearly a quarter of a million people were killed by the Indian Ocean tsunami that struck on 26 December 2004 resulting in record levels of aid being pledged in the aftermath of the disaster. The island of Aceh was amongst the worst hit in Indonesia with over a 100, 000 people killed.
Dr Jemilah Mahmood is an Obstetrician and President of the Malaysian based NGO Mercy Malaysia. She has worked in many disaster areas across Asia but when the tsunami struck, she along with her Mercy Malaysia colleagues immediately mobilized teams of volunteers to neighboring Aceh, where they quickly erected new homes and located new wells.
This year she became the first Malaysian woman to be awarded the Gandhi, King, Ikeda Award for her humanitarian work.
Our film profiles her and the work she is doing on Aceh
She joins Shahnaz Pakravan from the Kuala Lumpur studio to update us on what has happened this year and we ask if the aid money is being well spent.
