Middle Of The Road was a Scottish pop group who enjoyed great success across Europe in the early 1970s. Three of their singles sold over one million copies each, and received a gold disc. The tracks were "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" (which went on to sell over 10 million), "Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum" and "Soley Soley". By early 1972 alone the group had sold over five million records.

Lead singer Sally Carr (born 28 March 1945), drummer Ken Andrew (b. 28 August 1947), guitarist Ian McCredie (b. 15 July 1948), and on the bass his brother Eric McCredie (17 July 1945 - 6 October 2007) from Glasgow founded the band on 1 April 1970.

"Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" is a song made popular in 1971 by Middle of the Road for whom it was a UK number one chart hit.

Written by Harold Stott (known professionally as Lally Stott), it was a minor hit in Italy and Australia for the composer, as well as on the Billboard Hot 100, where it charted but failed to achieve significant success as the cover by Mac and Katie Kissoon became more popular. Stott's record company Philips were reluctant to release it overseas so he offered it to Scottish folk-pop group Middle Of The Road who were working in Italy at the time. The song became a large hit on the continent initially but became a hit in the UK as returning holidaymakers searched out a copy. It nearly flopped in the UK as Mac and Katie Kissoon released a version just before them, but aided by the patronage of DJ Tony Blackburn it became a massive hit. It reached #1 in the UK for five weeks in June 1971, the Kissoon version failed to chart in the UK but reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

NOTE: The guy in the back ground is Ilja Richter, host of the ZDF Disco show (1971-1982) in Germany. The show came monthly on Saturday evening; bit like a german version of Top of the Pops.
