PRINCE BIRTHDAY CONCERT SELLS OUT

text: Gary Graff

Pop star Prince decided Tuesday he wanted to have a surprise birthday concert in Detroit, and by Wednesday the guest list was filled and a second concert had been added.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. today for an 8 p.m. Friday concert at Masonic Auditorium. Around 4,000 tickets will be available at the Masonic box office and all Ticket World outlets except Hudson's.Tickets, at $17.50 each, will be limited to two per person because of the relatively small number of seats.

The second concert was scheduled after some 11,923 Prince fans lined up at the Joe Louis Arena box office (2,000 strong) and at Ticket World outlets around the state Wednesday, and in 45 minutes snapped up all available tickets to Prince's 28th birthday party -- a surprise concert Saturday at Cobo Arena. The sellout was one of the arena's fastest.

The remaining seats for the 12,191-seat arena were held for technical needs, Prince's personal guests, news media and radio stations.

The concerts are not part of a regular tour for Prince, the Minneapolis-based musician (real name Prince Rogers Nelson) who has been recording for eight years but came to prominence with his 1984 album and film, "Purple Rain." They are part of a series of loosely organized shows to get his recently expanded band, the Revolution, primed for a summer tour of the United States.

The pre-tour concerts also are designed to fill in for a European tour that was canceled because of the recent increase in terrorism.

The shows at small theaters in Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles have been wild, rocking affairs of two hours and longer with a mix of Prince's best material -- including No. 1 singles like "When Doves Cry" and "Kiss" -- and old James Brown and Jerry Lee Lewis songs.

THE DETROIT concert announcement surprised even local promoters Quentin Perry and Billy Sparks, longtime Prince associates who had roles in the film "Purple Rain."

Perry said he was called Tuesday morning by Steve Fargnoli, Prince's Los Angeles-based manager.

"He said, 'Prince decided he wanted to play for his birthday,' " Perry recounted. "We asked where. He said, 'He's gonna come to you guys; he wants to play Detroit.'

"We thought he'd play someplace small, but (Fargnoli) said, 'Nah, Detroit doesn't do anything small. Let's play Cobo.' So that's what we delivered."
