Bubonic Chronic Biog

Bubonic Chronic is a pioneering hip hop group, originally from Clay Cross, Derbyshire, UK (Clay Cross is referred to as "The Cross" in their lyrics).

The crew was initially composed of nine MCs, though it was reduced to eight with the death of original member The Dawsonator in 2004. All nine members have released solo albums, and the group has spawned many affiliate groups. This was the plan from the group's inception: to become an empire by taking over the hip hop community through saturation of like minded artists.

Though the group's style has evolved considerably over the years, and the solo projects of individual members differ in tone and content, the group is generally well-known for thumping, surreal beats and aggressive lyrics loaded with metaphor, references to life in The Cross, and allusions to Chinese folklore and martial arts films.

The founders of Bubonic Chronic were cousins Doc Shootay, Snoop Coddy Codd, and The Notorious B.E.Z. who had previously comprised the by-then-defunct trio Dropkick Monkey Bucket, who became better known as Boomerang Ash after they had a popular single of that name. The group had attracted the attention of some in the industry, including Biz Markie, but had never managed to secure a record deal. Since the crew dissolved, Doc Shootay and B.E.Z had also embarked on separate unsuccessful solo careers with Anal Lice Records and Johnny Man Hat Records respectively. The three cousins' frustration with the workings of the hip hop music industry would provide the main inspiration to Bubonic Chrnoics revolutionary business plan.

Bubonic Chronic was gradually assembled in late 1992 from friends and accomplices from around The Cross, with Doc Shootay as the de facto leader & the group's producer. The two cousins (Shootay and The B.E.Z) created their new Bubonic aliases by mimicking the sound that the words "hooray" and "pez" would make when scratched on a turntable.

The chronic's first single became known to hip hop fans, and to major record labels, in 1993 following the release of the independent single Cunt Chimp, which immediately gave the group a sizeable underground following. Though there was some difficulty in finding a record label that would sign bubonic chronic while still allowing each member to record solo albums with other labels, 90st Remmer Records finally agreed and the debut album "The Silky Bags are on me" in late 1993 was popular and critically-acclaimed, though it took some time to gain momentum. Though hip hop had long had a gritty texture, the surreal aggression and minimalist production of Silky Bags nevertheless had a huge impact on the genre, and was to prove massively influential over the next decade. By the beginning of the 21st century, the album had become a regular fixture on "Best Albums Of The 90s" lists as well as a frequent choice for "Best Albums Of All Time" lists.

The success of "The Silky Bags are on me" established the group as a creative and influential force in early 1990s hip hop, allowing Doc Shootay, Snoop Coddy Codd, Professor Sellotape, The notorious B.E.Z. and Big Maz Tizzle to negotiate solo contracts.
