"Tengoku to jigoku" is the epitome of police procedural films. AkiraKurosawa blessed cinema with "Tengoku to jigoku"(literally, Heaven and Hell)in 1963 and it withstood the test of time. Known as "High and Low" in theUSA, "Tengoku to jigoku" belongs in the same group of timeless film-noirclassics as "The Third Man," "Touch of Evil," and "The Maltese Falcon."There are no weak points in the story or the film itself. The legendaryToshiro Mifune plays a wealthy shoe manufacturer who gets involved in acomplex kidnapping. The pacing fits the narrative perfectly---"Sanjuro,"another Kurosawa film, seemed like it was longer and it was more than fortyminutes shorter. Watch "Tengoku to jigoku" and be captivated.
