The mid-70s, Pusan South Korea. In a time when students fastened their collars and creased their slacks till they were razor sharp, four friends strutted around in their own custom-fashioned uniforms. They walked the streets with heads held high and feared nothing when together.
Joon-suk was the son of a vigilant gang boss; Dong-su was the only son of undertaker; Sang-taek was a diligent, straight “A” student; and Jong-ho was a blabbermouth and the group's comic foil. They were friends who traded dirty magazines, exchanged fantasies about women and shared their awe at Bruce Lee's Kung Fu prowess.
Now, their lives have taken different turns but cross in conflict with each other's paths. Joon-suk becomes the henchman of his father's crime ring and Dong-su is serving for Joon-suk's rival gangs. Sang-taek and Joong-ho find themselves watching helplessly as their two best friends wield knives at each other-- until a tragic incident finally puts their friendship to the test.
A beautiful and nostalgic coming-of-age drama. Friend is director Kwak Kyung-taek's semi-authobiographical tale of friendship. it has been named Korea's all time top grossing film. Dubbed in Tagalog.
