Taiwanese singer/actor Richie Jen (Exiled) and Mainland starlet Fan Bingbing (A Battle of Wits) match up for the 2007 romantic comedy Contract Lover. In recent years Alfred Cheung (All's Well, End's Well 1997) has been appearing in front of the camera more often than behind it, but he does both for Contract Lover, returning to the director's chair for the first time in six years. Drawing from tried-and-true rom-com tropes, with a humorous kung-fu subplot thrown in, Contract Lover is a sincere and amusing romance that should fans of the genre. The film also co-stars former Miss Hong Kong Kate Tsui (Eye in the Sky) and martial arts veteran Yuen Wah (Kung Fu Hustle).
Beijing banker Fat (Richie Jen) is going back to Guangdong to visit the family, and his parents are demanding he bring his girlfriend. The only problem is that his other half, Rachael (Kate Tsui), is an outspoken, domineering career woman who champions short skirts and pole dancing, and she has no intentions of buttoning up for Fat's traditional parents. The couple cook up a crack plan: hire a girlfriend who is sexier and more western than Rachael to scare the folks, so that when Rachael comes around, they'll love her automatically in comparison! Modest, but broke teacher Joe (Fan Bingbing) ends up getting picked for the job. Just like the contract says, she dolls up and wreaks havoc, but the plan hits some speed bumps. Fat's parents are more embracing of Joe than expected, and it seems Fat himself may be falling for this Contract Lover
