Alay ni Da King: An FPG Special(2007)

Susan Roces: 'I miss Ronnie even more today'

Actress Susan Roces admits that contrary to popular belief, not all wounds heal through time: she said that the pain caused by the death of her husband, King of Philippine Movies and former presidential candidate Fernando "Ronnie" Poe, Jr., is more intense three years after his death.

Poe died, days after getting comatose from a massive stroke, on December 14, 2004. The actor, acknowledged as the biggest star in the history of Philippine movies, died in the middle of an election protest, where he claimed he was cheated in the May 2004 presidential polls.

Friends and supporters are now passing over the memory of Poe's foray into politics, and are choosing to remember him for what he represented to all who loved him. Not as a political aspirant, but as the benefactor, friend, actor, producer and director par excellance who inspired generations of fans and fellow film artists and workers.

To allow Poe's memory to endure, Roces has promised to lend for posterity's sake her husband's memorabilia to the FPJ Hall of Fame in Mowelfund's (Movie Workers Welfare Foundation) Museum of Philipine movies.

Roces also granted exclusive rights to Cinema One to air the entire FPJ film library. She believes that the classic films that endeared her husband to generations of Philippines movies fans could now reach even more people, since Cinema One airs programs via free TV, cable TV and the internet.

Royal tribute

A television special fit for film royalty will be aired on Cinema One to honor Poe in time for the third anniversary of his death.

Titled "Alay ni Da King", the two-hour tribute will feature actors and actresses, including local filmdom's brightest stars, who will share their memories of how "Da King" made a difference in their lives.

The tribute will be hosted by Ms. Charo Santos-Concio, herself a leading lady of Poe in three films.

"Kung ano ang (tunay na) pagkatao niya, yun din ang lumabas na pagkatao sa mga roles na ginawa niya," describes Charo of FPJ. "He never gave you the impression (that) he was king," said Santos-Concio.

The TV special takes the viewer through Poe's meteoric rise from movie extra and stunt double until he reaches that pinnacle of an incredible career that made him, indisputably, "Da King."

The highlight of the TV special will be the airing of a 38-minute music video featuring Poe himself. It was the last production that he was involved in before he died.

The music video collects Poe's favorite songs played alongside memorable clips from his classic films. Poe himself chose which clips to include in the video.

According to Roces, Poe intended the music video to express her husband's gratitude to members the Philippines movie industry for supporting him throughout his career and political campaign.

Proceeds to be collected from the TV special will go to Mowelfund, a foundation that looks after the welfare of less fortunate members of the entertainment industry.

Viewers will realize how Fernando Poe, Jr. rose from tragedy (his father died and his family nearly lost all their possessions in the aftermath) to immortality as a cultural icon, inspiring the best out of every Filipino.

"Alay ni Da King: An FPJ Special" will be shown on Sunday, December 9 at 9 p.m. over ABS-CBN.
