Hold on to your cosmos, ladies. New York’s fab four are back this summer, and we get our first peek at the movie through the music of the Sex and the City soundtrack.
It was not too long ago, before a movie that escapes me at present, that I saw my first preview for Sex and the City. I remember getting chills and the giggles, followed immediately by an overwhelming sense of excitement. The show was bawdy, brave and funny, and through the course of six seasons I became very attached to the characters and their stories. When listening to the soundtrack, it’s fairly easy to see where each girl fits into the music.
The album opens with Fergie’s “Labels or Love”, and it’s all Carrie Bradshaw. With the Sex theme running through the background, the upbeat, dance floor ready “Labels or Love” will make you groove, while throwing out some of Miss Bradshaw’s favorite brands for fun.
“New York Girls” by Morningwood brings Samantha to mind instantly; the song has a funky beat and an egotistical attitude that fits perfectly with our girl Sam. The omnipresent Weepies make an appearance with “All This Beauty”. The song is optimistic and sweet, and one can easily see the happy-go-lucky Charlotte enjoying it.
As for Miranda, Bliss’s dreamy, melodic “Kissing” has a bit of a world beat feel in the drums, yet is feminine. It feels like the eclectic style of Miranda, and though the song is happy, it’s also a little sad. It fits Miranda, her soft center under the toughened exterior.
Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson appears on the album, singing “All Dressed Up in Love”. As one would expect, her voice is lovely, her sound reminiscent of the soul greats. “Heart of the Matter” is remade by India.Arie, and it’s fantastic, beautiful. Joss Stone breathes new life into “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”, singing backup for the great Al Green. Rev. Run will be glad to hear that “Walk This Way”, Run D.M.C.’s collaborative effort with Aerosmith, like the little black dress, never goes out of style.
My favorite song of the CD is Jem’s “It’s Amazing”. The song is amazing, utterly lovely and danceable. Jem’s voice reminds one of Dido (uncannily so), and it is a strength.
The album ends with a new and improved, jazzed up and brassy Sex theme that will have your Bradshaw-loving, Manolo-crushing, cosmopolitan-drinking hairs stand on end. The CD goes out with a big band bang that makes you want to hit the repeat button and go for another round with the ladies. Though not all of the songs were my style, the CD is a good, solid listen, and well worth the buy.
