beginning in August of 1977, he was given his own television series on Granada television. The original contract called for the production of 6 shows to be run weekly called "Marc". Intended to bridge the gap between the rock-n-roll of the early seventies with the current younger generation punk scene, the format was to allow Marc to play his own music, both old and new, as well as to introduce and interview new upcoming bands including Billy Idol and Generation X. Among the bands Marc introduced were the Boomtown Rats, whom he introduced with the line "The lead singer of the next group is almost as good-looking as me - but they have to do something about those clothes..."
For Marc, everything seemed to be going in the right direction. He was rumored to be negotiating a new multi-album contract with his record company and Granada had approached him with a proposal to extend his television show for another season. He had also just introduced his newest single on his show. It was 'Celebrate Summer' and seemed destined to make an impact on the charts. It was to be the last T.Rex single released during Marc's life. The last of the six Granada shows was to have special importance for Marc. His guest on that show was to be his long time friend and competitor, David Bowie. For the earlier shows, Marc has essentially mimed to pre-recorded songs. However, for the show with Bowie, the two of them jointly wrote a song together and planned to play it live as the finale of the show. The song started off well into perhaps a half-minute blues progression, but as the two stars approached the edge of the platform to begin their vocals, the front of the stage proved to be too small, and Marc tumbled off - an event that had fate been different may have been looked back on later as a humorous blooper. Following the recording of the show, Marc and David went out for dinner in Soho. Afterwards, David took Marc to see Tony Visconti's studio where David was currently doing some recording. Unfortunately, Tony was not there at the time. Marc reportedly looked around the control room in the studio and remarked, "So this is Tony's studio! It'll be nice to record here someday."
Unfortunately, such was to never be possible. Three days later, on September 16th, 1977, Marc and Gloria were returning home in the wee hours of the morning from a club. Gloria was at the wheel as Marc, despite his love for cars, had never learned to drive. On a tight curve in Barnes Common, Gloria lost control of the car which left the road and hit a tree. Just weeks short of his 30th birthday, Marc Bolan was killed instantly.
