Directed in brisk, semi documentary style by Jon Avnet, Uprising is a remarkable story remarkably told, a poignant and powerful saga of undaunted heroism. Leelee Sobieski, Hank Azaria, David Schwimmer, Jon Voight, Donald Sutherland, Cary Elwes, Stephen Moyer and others star in this fact-based tale that stirs the emotions and touches the heart.
In 1939 Poland, teacher Mordechai Anielewicz (Hank Azaria) leads a group of collaborators to form the Jewish Fighting Organization with the hope of staging an uprising against Nazi tyranny in this remarkable made-for-TV historical drama. The all-star cast includes Donald Sutherland as the conflicted chief of the Warsaw Ghetto's Jewish Council and Jon Voight as the German general sent to quell the rebellion.
There was resistance to the Nazi invasion throughout the war. Two major, seperate Warsaw uprisings were:

A struggle of the Jewish fighters who, between April 4, 1943 and May 16, 1943, gave armed resistance to the German efforts to liquidate the ghetto's remaining 55,000 inhabitants. The two principal Jewish resistance groups, a 500-strong Jewish Fighting Organization (ZOB) and a 200-strong Jewish Fighting Union (ZZW) knowing the Nazi plans for the 'Final Solution' decided to die fighting rather than passively accept their fate.
2. 1944 Warsaw Uprising (Polish: Powstanie Warszawskie)
A struggle by the Polish Home Army who, between August 1, 1944 and October 2, 1944 gave armed resistance to the Germans in anticipation of the Russian advance from the East.
