King Crimson - 2002 - Ladies of the Road (2 CD) [256]
Genre: Art Rock
Country: United Kingdom

KING CRIMSON biography (at Progarchives):
Michael GILES (drummer) and Robert FRIPP (guitarist) in 1968, they formed a new group which included bassist / singer Greg LAKE and saxophonist Ian McDONALD. So began KING CRIMSON, a group dedicated body and soul to the aims of its leader and noted for incessant changes of personnel.

Starting out as a heavy dark progressive rock band, using reeds, woodwinds and mellotrons, they made subsequent changes to a more experimental type of music in the 80's and a heavier metal-like sound in the 90's. Through it all, they have maintained their professionalism and have influenced hundreds of bands in the Avant-garde, Progressive and Heavy Metal area, always being ahead of their time.

"In The Court Of Crimson King" has since been considered the founding opus of a new musical genre progressive rock! All the reissues of live concerts, whetever current-day or historic, contain very complete booklets with numerous photos and lots of notes by Master FRIPP himself!

KING CRIMSON — Ladies of the Road [Album Reviews at Progarchives]:
Review by Sean Trane (Hugues Chantraine)
SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Prog-Folk Specialist - 4 stars
This album is so-called from Fripp’s Collector Club along with a selection of other recordings from the final line-up of the first reign of our red coloured majesty. Most of the recording of that period ranging from 69 until this tour are generally atrocious sounding and the official album called Earthbound was typical, and even a bloody shame!!!!

While not perfect, this release offers a very correct-sounding (but no more) of that Island line-up which will tour extensively the US and making a name for themselves over there as a live group (which they were not before because of constant changes). Unsurprisingly, the track listing is mostly axed towards Island with touches into the first albums but rather sparsely. One of the biggest disappointments with this album is that the debut title track is only a 45 sec bluesy spoof, but a rare (and quite different than single or previous live version) of Groon makes this interesting.

The second disc is rather a curiosity of sorts but reserved for crimsonic monarchy absolutist since it has some 11 parts of Schizoid Man, mostly improvised parts. Interesting to a point, but rarely up for a regular spin in your deck unless you are a 21st Century Psychotic Man.

Although I have certainly not heard the other release on offer in that Collection, I think that this might be the best record you could own from that particular version of KC, with a rather interesting track listing.

I was lucky enough to get this one over a reasonable price. This album is actually a compilation of some of the King Crimson's Collector's Club albums that include this Crimson lineup. You'd better get this if you really wanna know what Earthbound sounds like with a good audio quality. i was stunned and blown away when I heard the album!!! There is not a weak track here despite the fact that the last one is a blues version of The Court of the Crimson King, I find it rather interesting to listen to it. Alright check this out: The version included here of Pictures of a city is the best version I've ever heard!!! everyone plays the right thing at the right time. Mel collins never ceases to amuze me with his free jazz influences, he makes some arrangements in this song that sound simply amazing. The letters is also a very good track. Formentera Lady is also very well played. The Sailors Tale is always a pleasure to listen to it live and here is no exception. Mel collins always with his great coltrane saxing. Then comes the best song on the album, for me, Cirkus. Taking also on account that I've never listened to a Lizard song live, the really haunting version of cirkus is quite nice. This one's slower and darker mainly because of the mellotron duet. If you put this song to a kid its most likely that you make 'im cry. Well then comes Groon which is also very different from the version on Earthbound. Clearer mainyl and is also very cool with a drum solo. Get thy Bearings is also an excelent track with collins going nuts and also Ian Wallace plays a drum solo. Then we have of course, 21st Century Schizoid Man which I dont need to say anything about it and finally the blues version of the court of the crimson king. A very interesting version only I would've liked to listen to all of it and not have just a sample of it. OK, I only talked bout Mel Collins here annd Ian Wallace, but you must know that EVERYONE plays he's best in here, Boz Burrell's voice also is great. Then comes the second album which is a compilation of guitar and sax solos played during the "Mirrors" part of 21st Century Schizoid Man during their tour. Here Mel Collins shows that he is a master of the sax by almost tearing his sax in two. Well anyway if you find this album on your record store dont think twice and buy it!!!!
