Plot Outline The Mermaids Singing Season 1 Episode 1/3:
Brilliant, passionate and eccentric, clinical psychologist Dr. Tony Hill (Robson Green) has an extraordinary understanding of the criminal mind. It enables him to empathize with both victim and murderer ¡ and even to visualize the crimes. All the serial killers Dr. Hill has encountered have been behind bars...until now.
Robson Green plays Dr Tony Hill, a clinical psychologist with empathy beyond the established boundaries of his science. Intelligent and compassionate, Tony has always researched convicted killers, but is called to join in an ongoing case by ambitious DI Carol Jordan (Hermoine Norris).
Until now, the only serial killers Dr Tony Hill encountered were safely behind bars. Now the murderer is on the loose. When DI Jordan invites Hill onto the case, they work together to hunt down a vicious serial killer in the opening film "The Mermaids Singing".
The murders are increasingly chilling and each one gets closer to home.
Tony Hill (Green) is asked by Carol Jordan (Norris) to help her track down the serial killer of young men in and around Bradford....
Filming took place from 22 October 2001 to 14 February 2002 in various locations around Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham and Northumberland, including Bollyhope Quarry (Durham), Chopwell Woods (Gateshead) and the fabulous Eshott Hall (Northumberland) which was used for the Vance residence. Wire in the Blood is a Coastal production for ITV and was shown in the UK from 14 November - 19 December. Southern Star announced that it had sold the series to Showcase (Canada), HBO (Latin America), DRTV (Denmark), ABC TV (Australia), TVNZ (New Zealand) TV2 (Norway), RTE (Ireland) and M-Net (South Africa). It had its world premiere in Denmark.
The series is based on the best selling novels by Val McDermid and will be Coastal Productions first fully independent commission for 6 hours of drama. The series will go out under the title of Wire in the Blood - which is the title of the second book in the series. All three of the Tony & Carol novels have their titles taken from the poetry of T.S. Eliot, with Wire in the Blood taken from Eliot's Four Quartets.
Coastal have the rights to produce the series from the two books - The Mermaids Singing and The Wire in the Blood. This consists of three, two hour stories in one hour parts. The first two stories are based on the two books, but the third story called 'Justice Painted Blind', is written by Alan Whiting and based on Val McDermid's characters.
The third Hill/ Jordan novel, The Last Temptation, was released in the UK in February 2002. Although Coastal have the options on this also, there are no confirmed details on the plans for this book/ story at the present time.
