Marc Riley goes back in time to find out what some of the biggest artists in music history infamously said in the heat of the moment.

Would society react any differently to these events if they happened today?...

Six episodes of approximately 30 minutes each.

Episode 1: The Sex Pistols
An inspiration to countless bands, the Sex Pistols revolutionised rock 'n' roll, singing about anarchy, abortion, violence, fascism and apathy. In 1977, the Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee, icons Charlie Chaplin and Elvis Presley passed away, and Sid Vicious replaced Glen Matlock as the Sex Pistols' bassist. Sid joined fellow band member Johnny Rotten to talk to Radio 1 presenter John Tobler about their brand new album, Never Mind The Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols.

With help from the BBC archives, Marc plays back key parts of the interview, and talks to John Tobler about how he feels about it all 30 years on.

Episode 2: The Police
It's 1983. Margaret Thatcher won a landslide victory, the Hitler Diaries were published, and one of the biggest bands on the planet, Police, were on the verge of splitting up. Their album, Synchronicity, had achieved the Number 1 slot in the UK and the USA partly due to the popularity of the song, Every Breath You Take. The Police joined David "Kid" Jensen on Radio 1 for a Bank Holiday special, but personal and creative tensions were escalating, and shortly after this they split up.

Featuring extracts from the interview, Marc will catch up with Jensen to see if he was aware of the tensions at the time and whether the split came as a surprise to him.

Episode 3: The Ramones
Marc returns to 1977, a year which saw Star Wars fever sweeping the nation, fire-fighters striking over pay, and the Ramones talking to Radio 1's Bob Kilbey. Arguably the proto-punk rock band, the Ramones created a revolutionary sound that inspired the bands of the British scene as well as present-day American groups such as Offspring.

Re-playing highlights of the interview, Marc will get Bob Kilbey's take on their interview 30 years later.

Episode 4: Nicky Wire
The Musical Time Machine journeys back to 1996, where following the release of the hugely successful album Everything Must Go, Manic Street Preachers were in the public's eye. They were also famous for the disappearance of bandmate Richey James, the previous year. Nicky Wire joined Jo Wiley on her Radio 1 show. Tired of speaking on behalf of his absent bandmate, Wire gave a frank and honest view of his experiences of the past year, and his hopes for the future.

Broadcasting extracts from that interview, Marc will also speak to Jo Wiley about her own memories of that show.

Episode 5: Captain Beefheart and Tina Turner
It's two for the price of one this week, as we revisit the years 1976 and 1980 respectively and feature interviews from two of modern music's innovators. In the year that Agatha Christie died and Prime Minister Harold Wilson resigned, Tina Turner's life was in turmoil - both professionally and personally - following rumours of a split fom husband and singing partner, Ike. We feature extracts of her talking candidly about her life.

We then go forward to 1980, the year in which John Lennon was killed, Reagan beat Carter to become the US President, and war broke out between Iran and Iraq. One of music's most daring, creative and infuential artists, Captain Beefheart, joined David Hepworth at Radio 1 to speak about his loves and passions.

Episode 6: Keith Richards
We travel back for a final time to 1992. A year that saw Windsor Castle burn, Clinton become President, and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson separate. Legendary Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, joined Simon Bates at Radio 1 to publicise his solo album, Main Offender. He spoke candidly to the DJ about his love of touring, kicking his heroin addiction and the reasons behind his very-public feud with Mick Jagger.

Not only is this one of the most frank interviews Bates has done throughout his career, but it is also one of the only times that a guest has admitted to having a pistol with them in their bag.
