Hawkwind vocalist Robert Calvert's Lucky Leif And The Longships is an eclectic concept album, featuring hard rock ("Ship Of Fools"), proto Devo-like surf parodies ("Lay Of The Surfers"), vocal traditionals with synth trimmings ("Voyaging To Vinland"), cut-up spoken words ("Making Of Midgard"), lively piano numbers ("Brave New World"), art-blues ("Magical Potion"), bluegrass ("Moonshine In The Mountains"), synth psych ("Storm Chant Of The Skraelings"), proto XTC-like calypso stylings ("Volstead O Vodeo Do"), heavy funk ("Ragna Rock") etc. What really sets the album apart is the metronomic beats, the futuristic tone, the neurotic performance, the demented vocals, characteristics that predate what will eventually be called new wave. Unsurprisingly, Brian Eno produced this.
