Michael Lynch is Dublin's most notorious criminal, his brazen robberies making him the bane of the Gardaí and a hero to his fellow working class city Northsiders. When not playing happy families with his two wives - sisters Christine and Lisa - and his children, Lynch is busy plotting elaborate heists, thinking as much about the showmanship of it all as he is the loot involved. On his case is Garda Noel Quigley, his determination to convict Lynch slowly turning into an obsession. Inevitably, a showdown looms.

Michael Lynch, een dief boordevol talent, is de meest beruchte crimineel in Dublin. Hij gedraagt zich als een moderne Robin Hood: hij berooft enkel de rijken maar verkiest zelf een leven tussen de minderbedeelden, bijgestaan door zijn twee vrouwen, zijn kinderen en zijn bende. Wanneer het ook maar mogelijk is, verstoort Michael de gevestigde orde en zet hij met zijn spectaculaire overvallen de politie en andere criminelen voor schut. Naarmate zijn populariteit bij de bevolking toeneemt, groeit bij de politie de frustratie omdat ze hem niet te pakken krijgen. Vooral Noel Quigley maakt er een erezaak van om Michael Lynch een toontje lager te laten zingen.
