Formation

Bret Michaels and Rikki Rockett had their first band in 1982 called Spectres when Michaels and Rockett were still in high school. Michaels said Poison is the "ultimate garage band," as they started out with something like ten members: "If you had an instrument, you could be in the band. Then, if you couldn't make it to practice, you were no longer in. After it's all done, there's four or five people left, and that's your band."[citation needed]

[edit] Early Years (1983-1986)

Poison began their journey in 1983 under the name Paris and consisted of lead vocalist Bret Michaels, guitarist Matt Smith, bassist Bobby Dall, and drummer Rikki Rockett. Moving to Los Angeles in March 1984, they started playing the club circuit. The name Poison was picked by the band after a mob of angry parents protested to say that rock music was "poisoning" the lives of their children.

Smith, who was about to father a child and was concerned about the band's future, returned to Pennsylvania. The band began auditioning replacement guitarists when Smith left the group. After narrowing down the candidates to three - Slash, who would later join Guns N' Roses, Steve Silva from The Joe Perry Project, and C. C. DeVille - the band eventually agreed that DeVille's "fire" made him the best choice. The band gained its first major notoriety by appearing in a homosexual act involving 3 band members, simultaneously, on a lesser-known underground pornography film
