Burning Brides have started rock and roll religion with their fourth album Anhedonia. In continuing with their tradition of dark melodic heavy rock, the Brides have once again created a record full of haunting riffs and eerily beautiful anthems.
Anhedonia is 13 songs, 39 minutes long. No bullshit. No filler. Like the days when a band was allowed to develop and show its range from album to album, the Brides have allowed their new material to move into deeper waters. Produced by Dimitri Coats, and recorded in only three weeks, Anhedonia is Burning Brides' most profound and ethereal album to date. The basic tracks, recorded live, reveal the true spirit of the rock trio. Guitars breathe without many effects. The lyrics enter the subconscious core of what relationships may or may not be able to withstand. What remain are honest performances and a vibe that isn't over-thought or over-processed.
The songs on Anhedonia are shorter in length and more to the point, serving as important pieces to the album as a whole. 'Lovesick' and 'If One Of Us Goes Further' drive hard like dramatic riff-heavy declarations of dark love. 'Flesh And Bone', 'Heavy Rocks', and 'Comfortably Dumb' are nods to early 90's via early 70's black magic stoner gatefold rock. As with every Brides album, there are breaks in the clouds that allow for optimistic upbeat pop prayers like 'Fire Escape' and 'Hurry Up', and a ballad called 'This Is A Wave' which is perhaps the most beautiful song the band has ever released.
Real life bride & groom Melanie Coats (bass) and Dimitri Coats (guitar/vocals) met years ago in New York City, where they both studied at Juilliard. He was an actor who quit the school to start a rock band. She was a modern dancer who was just about to graduate. They fell in love through music and eventually started Burning Brides out of Philadelphia in 1999. Their first album Fall Of The Plastic Empire, which the band released themselves in 2001, led to a signing with the now defunct V2 Records. V2 re-released Fall Of The Plastic Empire worldwide in 2002 with the single 'Arctic Snow' which landed the Brides on Conan O'Brien and rock radio. Leave No Ashes followed in 2004 with the song 'Heart Full Of Black' which led to more radio play, another appearance on Conan, Guitar Hero, and bigger touring with everyone from The White Stripes and My Morning Jacket to Mastodon and A Perfect Circle. Not long before the collapse of V2, Burning Brides left the label with enough money to regroup. With best friend Pete Beeman (Guzzard) on drums, they released 2007's critically acclaimed Hang Love on their own. The Brides continue to build a loyal following while traveling the country in their veggie-oil vehicle. Being self-produced, self-financed, and self-managed has afforded Burning Brides the opportunity to operate under no label and the artistic freedom to move forward. They own their masters, publishing, and souls. A truly amazing rock band is hard to find these days. Look no further. Here come the Brides!
