Eddie James House Jr. was born in Mississippi sometime around the dawn of the 20th century and began preaching in Baptist churches during his teens. In his 20’s, an affinity for strong drink and female companionship effectively ended his preaching career. If it hadn’t, the manslaughter conviction and 15 year hard labor sentence at Parchman Farm (which he received for killing a man in self-defense) probably would have.
When he was released early from prison sometime before 1930, he began the first of his recording careers, working for Paramount. House later recorded for Alan Lomax’s Library of Congress Series in the early 40’s which is also represented in this collection. The later recordings which were made after his 1960’s rediscovery are not included here.
The influence of House on the development of Blues and Rock-n-Roll music cannot be overstated. He was a contemporary of Charley Patton and Willie Brown, a mentor to Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, and a powerful influence on Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James and Robert Nighthawk.
He was not the greatest vocalist or guitarist the blues has seen but both his voice and guitar work are powerful. And to this day, House continues to be an influence in popular music. One of his most well known songs, Death Letter or Death Letter Blues, has been recorded by artists as varied as The Grateful Dead, John Mellencamp, David Johansen and The White Stripes.
Bottom line: the path to modern music might have been very different had it not been for his influence
