The Morning Never Came

Every once in awhile a band comes around that doesn’t have really anything unique, but they do their thing so well, that it really doesn’t matter. SWALLOW THE SUN is one of those bands. The vocals are typical death metal but his voice does have something different to it, you can understand him quite well in certain areas. The music; nothing really new, downtuned melodic and doom-y; what makes this band such a good band though, is how well they use what they have. Thick with atmosphere, soaked in melody and filled with sorrow; this is one great doom band!

So the album starts off with a great piano intro, then the guitars come in playing the same melody as the piano was, from this first song (“Through Her Silver Body”) you already know this is going to be a great album. The album continues its voyage into the somber hearts of humankind with the excellent “Deadly Nightshade” with its amazing intro and chorus. That’s another thing about this band, the song structure although it normally goes, verse, verse chorus, every song doesn’t have that feel to it, every song feels like a different structure, very cool. The symphonic elements in this album are also very cool, although very light, the violins, cellos and choirs add a lot to each song.

This whole album just feels cold, very dark and somber, the album cover fits the album perfectly, almost like this album was recorded there. A couple of songs that capture the pure darkness are, “Silence of the Womb” which has an amazing chorus and riff, “Hold This Woe” which is just amazing, the symphonic effects, the great riff, the amazing piano parts and overall just sadness make this song rock. The album finishes with the title track, a monster of a song, the clean vocals, the build ups, the great riffing, the amazing chorus, simply put, this is an amazing song to end the album with. A very epic ending!

Hope

After being disappointed by Swallow the Sun's "Ghosts of Loss" album i thought it will be better to carefully check the new album "Hope" before it's officially released.

Disappointement turned to admiration. Swallow the Sun changed for good, this is perfection in it's entirety, although the songs seem a bit monotonous, nothing really new but things are done so well in a unique style, each song attract you in a different way, hold you like no other.

The lyrics as usual: poetic, sorrowful and depressive (not for people in a good mental state) haven't noticed any changes, accomplish just what they set out to do and fit very well with the music.

The music itself being amongst the saddest you might ever imagine, it can be described as melancholic, very dark and emotional creating a depressive atmosphere, a typical doomy one.
Mikko Kotamäki vocals are simple, typical death metal but suit the music well, some rare changes in vocal styles mixing death with clean vocals. The keyboards parts sound convincing adding extra effects, not too upfront or too loud, mixed with melodic, heavy, distorted guitars, loud bass and raw drums catching attention quite often taking you to another level, another world of darkness and loss.

The most magnificent track is "Don't Fall Asleep (Horror Pt. 2)" a perfect example of the darkness of the album, dominated by slow, depressive clean vocals really inspire melancholy, while harsh vocals turns the atmosphere to a real horror and obscure one. This song is highly recommended for all doomsters and dark music lovers.

Overall, an excellent album, a must for Doom/Death Metal lovers, this is a huge accomplishment the darkest work of the band ever.
