The Honan Style of Hsing-I Chuan was a secret of the Muslims of China for
over 400 years. Once the Communists took over, they forced the Muslim ethnic minority
to make the style public. Sometimes called the "cruelist of kungfu styles" this system
of hand-to-hand combat is taught to the Red Chinese Army.
Hsing-I Chuan (or "Mind-Form Fist") is one of the three major internal kungfu systems.
The other two are Tai Chi Chuan and Ba Gua Chang. Hsing-I Chuan is the most direct and
forceful of the three. It makes use of evasive actions to avoid the opponent's strengths
while making use of angled attacks and joint locks to take advantage of the opponent's
weaknesses. This style is very different from and more effective than what is known
as the Classical Hsing-I Chuan or Shanshi style.
Like the other two internal systems, Hsing-I gives good health and long life to those
who practice the relaxed strength and deep breathing of this system. It should be used
as a daily exercise rather than as a forceful martial art. Indeed, the power of kungfu
is found through relaxed exercise rather than through forceful flexing of the muscles.
By being relaxed during the movements, the internal power of the qi manifests and the
devasting and explosive strikes of the system are realized.
All techniques of this system are designed to break bones, dislocate the joints and
burst the internal organs of the opponent creating internal bruising and bleeding as
well as brain embollism. So, you should not be fooled by the relaxed way in which
the system if practiced. Relaxed strength gives an elastic, snapping power known
Included in this torrent is Yang Jwing-Ming's video on Tai Wrestling and joint
locking which uses similar methods of joint locking as found in the Hsing-I.
